Reminds me that I need to have you upgrade (one of these days) my Starlite (v.1.0) with another mesh pocket on the upper right side. The Starlite just keeps going & going.... Tremendous pack.

I very much enjoyed reading this first part. You are absolutely right about fear of the unknown dictating hiking choices.

Do you have a sense of one part two will be available?

It is generally so buggy here in south Texas that I couldn't really use my cape as a shelter. I recently decided to turn my Gatewood into a dedicated tent by sewing bug netting to the bottom edge. Then I was planning on adding a floor and zipper to the netting to create a tarp tent, but the Serenity NetTent will be even better as I will still be able to use my Gatewood Cape as a cape. Also the NetTent will allow me to open up a door for the view or breeze and still be bug free. It appears to have a "bathtub" floor which is more than I was planning (Ron's warnings about bathtub floors not withstanding.)

Of course now I will have to rip out the 24 feet of netting. I guess I better get started.

I use feedblitz.com to keep my blog readers up to date. It automatically creates an email newsletter with your blog postings using RSS. You should check it out - it's a huge time saver for me. If you subscribe at my blog, http://sectionhiker.com, you can see what the user experience is like. It's funny, I just posted a detailed review of the Starlite that I bought from you last year. Keep up the good work and I look forward to participating in your new community.

At least no one threw the competition off the top of ***'s Pass. The cottage industry can't afford to lose anyone. Nerxt year, maybe you should take Mountain Laurel Designs along with you.

I thru-hiked the TRT in 2001 as part of the official opening ceremony for the TRT. It is an absolutely wonderful trail.

Anyone with limited vacation time who wants to thru-hike, this is the one! If you have even more time, either the JMT or the Long Trail would be appropriate.

Yes you absolutely correct. We are neither the first nor the only people travel through the backcountry traveling light. However; for the purpose of this blog I'm limiting my comments to today’s generation of recreational backpackers.

We owe a lot to people in other disciplines who travel lightly and can garner everything from inspiration to practical techniques from them.

re: Ultralight Hikers Philosophers Guide - Introduction

"Understandably, ultralight backpacking roots lay deep in the world of long distance backpacking. Long distance hikers are faced with the need to cover thousands of miles over a relatively short time span. This requires long hours of hiking day after day. With little time spent in camp, there is less need to carry a bunch of gear whose sole purpose is to make camp time more comfortable. Efficiency of travel is the key consideration."

Although not backpackers, the pioneers as they headed west of the Mississippi in their wagons adopted the philosophy. The trails became littered with heavy pots, sewing machines and other heavy items that they discarded to lighten their loads.

The diaries of the Civil War soldiers express similar sentiments as they discarded issued equipment from their packs in order to carry less weight on their backs. The majority of Confederates did not get to Harpers Ferry or Gettysburg on horseback or wagon.

We are not the first generation of lightweight backpackers!
