Lunar Solo/Duo in Tasmanian (wet/cold/windy) conditions

    Hi All,

I live in Tasmania, Australia, the home of some amazingly beautiful bushwalking country.  I'm currently getting back into bushwalking after many years off and I'm putting together a lightweight collection of gear.  I will definitely be getting a SMD backpack shortly, but I'm also interested in the Lunar Solo and Duo tents.  I noticed a photo from one "Darren Stephens" of a lunar solo in Tasmania, and I was hoping to contact him, or somebody who kew him, to find out how the tent performed under Tasmanian conditions.  For those unfamiliar with Tasmania, conditions here can go from sunny and warm (20C) to windy, cold, (-5C), and wet in a few minutes in the highlands.  Oh, and we get random ocurrences of snow as well, but usually not huge dumps.

To be honest, I don't thinks ithe snow is totally random, it usually ocurrs when I'm out bushwalking... :)

So, I know you list the Lunar tents as "3 season" but that means different things to different people.  I was hoping to get some view from people who had used either tent of how they perform under difficult conditions.  Probably my main concern would be how either tent copes with strong gusty winds, combined with heavy rain.

Thanks in advance to anybody who reads this and replies.

    Cheers,

    Stuart

    G'Day Mate

Thats my little tent your talking about and i love it. As you would know that pick was taken on the overland track but luckily for me the both times i have walked it i had reasonable weather. Some thing i have found, Use a guy rope from the tie out point near you head to stop you brushing the tent at night, The condensation can be quite heavy when its still as you would expect so i have a small sea to summit pactowel near my heat that i wipe the area above my head in the night, especially if you have to get up. I use 400mm cords on all the ties to give greater flexibility, If it is very windy i just put the stakes up against the loops and pull it down to the ground and hopfully have the back to the wind. Its no expedition tent but i find it very stable and dry in the wind.

My favorite thing is how easy it is to put up, a couple of stakes, pole, then pull tight, Its literally that easy.

All in all im happy, i have since bought a gatewood cape for UL trips and now my missus is coming along im going to buy a lunar duo. Ron has been very helpful when i needed him so send him a note if you have any Q's.

Sorry if that sounded like an infomercial.

    Hope it helps

    Darren

If all tie out loops are pulled taut the Solo can withstand fairy strong wind. But at one time when it's about 30mph I did worry about it's strength so I set my feet toward the wind stuff my backpack there, and release the tension a little bit and at that end. The fly keep pressing my feet but I got a good sleep with my head side guy line attached. Fortunately the rain is not heavy that night so only some mist passed through the mesh.
